Beef and Sausage Sloppy Joes

2 tsp vegetable oil
1 cup onion, chopped
2 tsp garlic, minced
1 lb lean ground beef
1 lb mild Italian sausage, chopped, casings removed
4 cups fresh tomatoes, chopped (or 28 oz can tomatoes, drained)
1 1/2 tsps dried basil
1 tsp chili powder
1/2 tsp dried oregano
2 tbsp parmesan cheese, grated (optional)
In a large non-stick skillet, heat oil over medium heat; add onions and garlic and cook for 4 minutes or until softened. Add ground beef and sausage, breaking up meat with a spoon, and cook for 5 minutes, or until no longer pink. Drain off excess fat. Add tomatoes, basil, chili powder and oregano; bring to a boil, reduce heat to low and simmer uncovered for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally. Serve over toasted hamburger buns. Sprinkle with parmesan cheese, if desired.
